Most people know Ulay (Frank Uwe Laysiepen, 1943-2020) from the ‘relation works’ he made with Marina Abramovic between 1976 and 1988. Prior to these works he had already developed himself as one of the most prominent representatives of body art through his radical performances.
During the early 70s Ulay had a lengthy collaboration with German artist Jürgen Klauke. In 1975 they performed together at the Amsterdam performance gallery De Appel.
Photography was an important medium for Ulay. During the 70s he got the opportunity to work with special equipment allowing him to produce life-sized Polaroids.
