Galerie A: Exhibition Paul Sharits (1943-1993)
From February 1 till March 14, 2017 Galerie A will show more than forty drawings, objects and photoworks of Paul Sharits from the period 1965 – 1990.
In 1977 Paul Sharits was in Amsterdam to organize his first exhibition of drawings at Galerie A.
I have thousands of concept-notes-drawings-journals; some of them are highly personal (and a bit mad, sometimes Fluxmadness and sometimes Heavy Mad); also photo pieces; also a couple of photo+object pieces (one with sound, if possible – best to have a quadrophonic tape play-back with 10” reels…second best, stereo with 10” reels…or, silent); a whole mixture of things. Most from the mid-late 60’s to early 70’s (from a letter, dated: April 11, 1977).
To pep up the opening, Sharits suggested we accompany it with a performance. One of his so-called ‘flicker films’ would serve as a basis. During the film images of toilet paper being unrolled were alternated with words like PULL, DOWN, ROLL and FOLD.
Between 1976 and 1993 I showed the works by Paul Sharits in many solo and group shows. And I organized events in other places: a film installation in Galerie Waalkens, Finsterwolde and a screening during the 16 Dagen Zomermanifestatie (Groninger Museum), both in 1977.
For the exhibition 60/80, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (1982), a Frozen Film Frame (16 mm film between Plexiglas) was constructed.
Sharits is considered to be one of the most important experimental filmmakers. He was represented in the documenta 5 (1972) and documenta 6 (1977). In 2014 a retrospective show was organized at the Fridericianum in Kassel.
Between 1972 and 1993 Sharits wrote more than 100 letters to Galerie A. A selection will be published in early 2018.
